JUNE

John Wright RIP

It is with great sadness that we heard the news of the passing of John Wright, former President and Honorary Secretary of the Irish Cricket Union and also President of the Leinster Cricket Union.

Our deepest sympathy goes out to his family, friends and colleagues at Malahide Cricket Club.

Railway Under 11's

Congratulation to both Billy Siggins Railway team and Pembroke Under-11B's for braving the elements and getting through their match on Tuesday night at Sydney Parade when most senior cricketers were huddled indoors sheltering from the rain. The match was won by Railway. Well done everyone involved.

[At Sydney Parade (reduced to 17 overs a side due to rain) ]

PEMBROKE 73 for 3 (Eoin Healy 2-9, Iain McKenna 1-4)

RAILWAY UNION 74 for 2 (Eoin Healy 7no, Bhargav Gumulapurupu 5no, Oisin McWilliams 4no)

Northants v Somerset

A great performance by NOB O Brien in the Twenty20 on Sunday for Northants v Somerset which was seen on TV .

Congratulations Kenny Carroll

Kenny picked to play fro Ireland A at Stormont next Tuesday .  He had the honour of facing the first ball bowled in Twenty20 match for an Ireland X1 at Oak Hill on Sunday and took first catch in the field.

3rd X1 progress in Middle Cup and Satyam takes a hat trick.

Congratulations to the 3rd X1 who overcame Bagenalstown away in the 1st Rd on the Middle Cup. Bagenalstown had proved to be a bogey team for Railway over the last few seasons, so this win was very sweet. Well done to Satyam for taking a hat trick. Maybe Thinus has started something!

Oak Hill CC

Congratulations to TJ who has been invited to officially open Peter Savill's splendid new facility at Oak Hill Cricket Club, Kilbride, Co Wicklow next Sunday prior to the hosting of two T20 matches between an Ireland X1 and celebrity team Lashings CC. An article by Emmet Riordan about the development of Oak Hill appeared in last Mondays Irish Times. Many thanks to Mr. Savill for making tickets available to the Club for the matches which are not open to the general public. Our 2007 Under-11 team will travel to Oak Hill on the following Sunday to play Ampleforth College Junior School. Full details on website next week.

Well done Padraic

Best wishes to Padraic Flanagan who has been selected on the Leinster Under-13 team to play in the Interpros. taking place in the North West from July 2nd - 4th.

Avaya Team

Congratulations to the Avaya team who defeated IBM in the final of the Corporate T20 Cricket Tiger Cup on Monday at Park Avenue. It was good to see our old friend Samrat Paul back at Railway and on the winning team.  We look forward to hosting the competition again in 2009 and hope that more teams enter.

TJ Back for Ireland X1

TJ has been included in the Irish X1 due to play Lashings CC in two 20/20 matches that take place in Oak Hill CC Wicklow to mark the opening of thaat splendid facility on June 22nd. Exactly one week later our Under-12 team ( 2007 Under 11's) will play on the same magnificient ground versus Ampleforth College Junior School.

Leinster Averages

Just for those who don’t read the Leinster Web Site / Averages here is an update.   Great RUCC representation, from the ‘Skip’ in both Batting & Catches, Copes in everything & leading the all-rounders, Tom & Squacko moving up the batting and the other catchers.  Could do with another bowler or two moving in on the list…..

Big Viv

Just want to wish Kevin "Big Viv" O'Brien all the best for his trail with Middlesex CC next week. I was hoping it wouldn't happen from a captains point-of-view but it was only a matter-of-time that a player of this quality would live the dream of every cricketer. We're all be hoping it goes well mate.

RU beat Pembroke in Tillain Cup 1st Round

Excellent bowling by stand-in skipper Lambo ( 4-22) and Zulfi (4-33) turned the tide for Railway in the Tillain match played in the usual freezing conditions on Monday night. Railway posted 174 ( S. Ullah 44, Tim 36) and Pembroke were actually ahead of the run-rate in their chase when Lambo and Zulfi struck. Danny Barclay top scorer for 'Broke with 58 being caugt and bowled by Zulfi, a turning point in the Innings.

Kevin does well

93 not out by Kevvy O'Brien almost snatched victory for Ireland v Notts. in FP Trophy on Monday at Trent Bridge on Monday. Ireland were unlucky to lose by one run, Kevvy hitting a four off the last ball when a six would have brought victory.

'Battle of O'Briens' takes place in Castle Avenue on Wednesday when Northants. play Ireland in last FP match with Niall facing his brother.

Botha shrugs off injuries to deny Railway Union place in DGM Final.

Railway once again had to play second fiddle to North County, being beaten in the DGM semi-final at Inch last Saturday by 81 runs. Andre Botha who was unable to play for Ireland due to injuries, tore up his 'sick note' and sickened Railway to deny them a place in the Final versus Pembroke.  Andre scored 116 and bowled a miserly seven overs for 11 runs, which was the main difference between the teams.

Records smashed at Park Avenue on Sunday: Railway beat CYM in high scoring first league match in Senior B League

Ger O'Brien, who has been spotted practicing on the mat at CYM in Terenure took two wickets to bring his total of Senior Leinster wickets to 150.

The runs continued to flow for TJ again on Sunday. This time he made 168 not out in a Railway total of 289 /7. which is a personal best and beats  his 140 not out that he scored for LCC against Railway Union in 2001 when Leinster amassed a total of 354 to beat Railway by 3 runs at Rathmines.

Railway had been 110/5 when Gareth Carroll (29) got his head down with TJ, who went on to reach 168 from 110 balls, Railway getting around 10 per over for the last 10 overs. CYM made a spirited reply and picked up four bonus points, eventually losing by only 38 runs. We look forward to the return match on the mat in Terenure.  CYM seem to have got together a useful team for a Club that wanted to withdraw from Senior Leinster Cricket just a short time ago.

Read Stu Daultrey's column with accounts of both matches on the 'cricketeurope' website. There is also excellent  photographs taken by Joe Curtis on the LCU section of the website of the DGM match. Some players from Railway may not wish to view them!

Congratulations Ger O'Brien!

The secret of Ger O'Brien's success this season is to practice on the mat at CYM.  We know you live in Terenure but want you to stay!  Congrats on taking 150 Senior Leinster wickets on Sunday!

Copeland Blows Hot in Cold Blow Lane

Trent Copeland gave one of the best all round displays ever seen at at Park Avenue on Saturday when Railway defeated near neighbours Pembroke in Round 1 of Antalis Cup with figures of 116 not out and a five wicket haul 5-46.

Needing 8 runs from the last over to compete a century, Trent went to score a further 24 runs to finish 116* from 60 balls. He hit one six that bounced off the bowlers fence and dropped down on Wild Bill's head to add to the ignominy being suffered by the 'Broke supporters! Earlier, Kenny Carroll had made 92. ( More info on LCU page)

Tim gets a 'ton' for Thirds

While Trent Copeland was hitting a 'ton' at Park Avenue, Tim Townend completed the same feat at Wesley College versus Dundrum CC and not to be outdone Stephen Noone chipped in with a six wicket haul. Congratulations to both players.

Air Corps shoot down RUCC Taverners

RUCC Taverners continued their season with a highly enjoyable match vesus Air Corps on Friday night. The Air Corps team was formed due to the interest created by the CWC in 2007 and are a welcome addition to the 'Taverners Circuit'. The result was yet another narrow defeat for Railway with the highlight being Neville being tonked onto the patio by Barry Jones of the Air Corps with a shot that he clearly had rehearsed on Dublin GAA fields! Brendan Mays recived the MoM Award.

Cocktail Night a great success

Many thanks to Tanya, Denise, Aoife, Carol, Mully, and all who organised and supported the Cocktail Night in Railway after the cup match. Well done.

Leinster CC Women unable to field a team

The failure of Leinster CC to field a team in the opening match of the Women's League on Thursday last was a big disappointment to all in Railway as our girls had practiced diligently for several weeks and beaten Pembroke in a 'warm-up' with a big crowd of supporters were looking forward to our competitive debut.

Railway Boys in Schools Final

No fewer than six boys from Railway took part in the Schools final played between Gonzaga and CUS on Monday last. David and Hugo Mays, Chris Coburn and Paddy Lynn were on the victorious Gonzaga team with Stephen Noone and Peter Reddy representing CUS.

Gerry Lyons RIP

Railway Union extend their deepest sympathy to the family and also members of Leinster CC on the sad passing of Gerry Lyons last week. Gerry was a great friend of everyone involved with cricket at Railway and gave so freely of his time with advice and practical knowledge as to how our playing facilities could be improved. He will be missed. As a mark of respect, a minutes silence was observed by both teams and officials before the Antalis Cup match on Saturday.

Trent Johnston gets Sunday Indo Player of Year Award:

Congratulations to our own Trent Johnston, who won the Sunday Independent Player of the Year!

Girls save blushes:

After 'Black Saturday' when all RUCC teams lost, The Under 11 Girls restored some pride when they travelled to Malahide on Sunday and beat the home side. Not be oudone, our Womens team got off to a winning start in their debut 'friendly' match vesus Pembroke on Monday night at Sydney Parade.

Stephen Noone takes two wickets for Leinster Under-17s v NWCU at Strabane:

Stephen who has attended winter coaching and taking pat in trials for several years finally made his Leinster debut and capped an excellent performance with two wickets last Sunday removing two of the top order batsmen.

US Twenty20 League:

Kev and Trent Johnston were approached to play in a 20/20 competition in America. KO'B can’t as he signed a contract for Ireland and TJ can’t as he has a the semi in the DGM. Pity the money was the same as the IPL! You can read about it at the link below.

Salute to Derek Scott:

DEREK won the Leinster Cricket Union Hall of Fame Award in 2007 for his lifetime of service to the game, including 60 years as Railway Union representative on the LCU Committee, 24 years as Honorary Secretary of the Irish Cricket Union (preceded by 22 years as Assistant Secretary), and President of the ICU in 2001.  Add to that his unparalleled compilation of Leinster and Irish cricket statistics without the aid of computers. It is also safe to say he has watched more Irish, Leinster and Railway Union cricket than any other person living or dead.

Derek, how did you become so interested in cricket?

Through my elder cousin, Tommy Lonergan, who was good at all games and a hockey international with Railway Union. Also my mother took me for walks in the Phoenix Park and I saw the cricketers there.

Your earliest cricketing memory?

1939, at ten years of age, listening the final England v West Indies Test on radio and England’s opener Walter Keeton being bowled first ball of the match by the West Indian Tyrell Johnson with his first ball in his only Test. Also, seeing Ireland v Scotland in College Park the same year.

The first match you played?

I played some Under 19s games for Railway Union in summer 1940 and I remember a house game in Willow Park School in 1941.

The high point in your playing career?

Captaining Railway Union 1st XI to winning the Leinster Senior League for the first time in 1960.

And the low point?

1961, still captain, losing the Leinster Senior Cup final by two wickets.

The high point in your career as an administrator?

Being partly responsible for getting Ireland into the Gillette Cup and the International Cricket Conference and enabling the Irish team to play competitive games for the first time.

And the low point?

Canada 2001 when the Irish team failed narrowly to qualify for the World Cup finals. They were good enough to go through.

The greatest cricketer you ever watched?

Don Bradman. Saw his second ball duck in his final Test innings in 1948 and then 120 which he made the following week against the Gentlemen of England.

And the greatest Irish cricketer?

Alec O’Riordan The international cricketer for whom you have the greatest respect? Hansie Cronje for the excellent manner in which he fulfilled his three week contract with Ireland in 1997 as player, coach and willingness to be fully involved. Everybody was surprised and shocked later with the match-fixing and then his tragic death in an air crash at 32.

What are you most likely to say about 20/20 cricket?

Don’t ask me to watch too much of it.

What are you least likely to say about 20/20 cricket?

The same!

Your greatest unfulfilled ambition in cricket?

That I never made a senior 50.

The funniest incident in all your years playing and watching cricket?

Senior Cup match against Leinster in the 1950s. Leinster lost wickets rapidly chasing just over 100 and they needed only three or four runs to win, with last man, fast bowler Foxall coming to the wicket. Robbie Duffy (brother of Gerry) said: “I’ll shield you, just block out the over and then I’ll be facing”. Said Foxall: “The rabbits are in, every man for himself” and he took a wild swing and was bowled first ball.

CBS Westland Row honours “Ginger”

Brendan, Railway Union’s greatest cricketer, was capped 52 times and captained Ireland as well as accumulating records in Leinster cricket, including most runs and most appearances, which may never be surpassed. His legendary career spanned six decades through 1959 to 2001. He also played League of Ireland soccer with Shelbourne FC for four years and was capped internationally at youth and junior level. He was a first team player with Railway Union Hockey Club for over 20 years and was capped at interprovincial level.

Resident in Sandymount all of his life, Brendan did his leaving certificate in Westland Row in 1960 and joined the Revenue Commissioners where he was promoted to Senior Inspector. Camilla and Brenda O’Brien have produced an extraordinary sporting family with Niall now having 47 Irish cricket caps, Kevin 35 and Ciara approaching 150 Irish hockey caps and all still counting as we write. (See Ger Siggins’ article about the “other O’Briens” on pages 20-22).

Adi Birrell tells the story behind the success

ADI BIRRELL, the inspirational coach of the Irish squad in the World Cup, gave a slide presentation in Railway Union in February. Funds raised during the evening are being used to support youth coaching at Scoil Mhuire Girls’ National School, Lakelands.  Adi showed how a team mostly of part-time week-end cricketers were transformed over three months of preparation in Africa and the West Indies into a skilled and highly motivated army which stood proudly on the world stage, gaining a place in the Super Eight finals of the Cup and beating Pakistan and Bangladesh and having a nail-biting tied finish against Zimbabwe. Part of the preparation involved time in Adi’s native South Africa where every aspect of the physical, mental and emotional preparation was taken in hand. Ireland’s cricketers became not just a team but a cheerful family who played for each other and took their disappointments as sportingly as their victories.

Nobody can ever forget St Patrick’s Day 2007 when Inzamam-ul-Haq and his mighty men of Pakistan were toppled, with brothers Niall and Kevin O’Brien grinding us towards victory which was final when Trent Johnston hit a towering six into the crowd. It was fully deserved when RTE viewers voted Ireland’s cricketers the sports team of the year and captain Trent Johnston was chosen for a Texaco award. No wonder Trent and Ger Siggins called their book Raiders of the Caribbean!

From Rugby Union CC to Railway Union CC  - 23 February 2008

Railway Union Cricket Club are delighted to announce that they have engaged the services of Sydney 1st Grade all-rounder Trent Copeland for Season 2008. Trent who turns 22 on March 14th plays his cricket with the famous St. George Club. St. George currently head the Sydney 1st Grade League as the season draws to a conclusion. Trent who is a right handed top order batsman and has been particularly effective in Sydney 1st Grade with his right-arm fast medium bowling. He began playing aged eleven in his native Bathurst NSW with a club called Rugby Union Cricket Club. He moved to Sydney aged seventeen to go to University stuying Bachelor of Sports Studies (specialising in coaching) and playing cricket for the St. George Club. Trent has the distiction of representing New South Wales at both Hockey and Cricket.

Everyone in Railway Union would like to welcome Trent Copeland to Dublin and to our Club and look forward to him having a successful and enjoyable time in Irish cricket. With two Trents in the Club, we hope that it does not get too confusing!

Christopher Coburn - 04 February 2008

Christopher Coburn has enjoyed his time running around in the 16's on Saturday mornings and then with the 4th grade Whites on Saturday afternoons over the past few weeks.   'It's been great, I've learned a lot from the boys and the old guys in the whites, said Chris after a quite coldie after last Saturday's game (soft drink that is).' I've been to Sydney a few times and around the traps seeing the local sights. The new power station at Tallawarra will be awesome, as will the grounds at Reed Park when the dressing sheds are built'. I'd like to come back and be at the opening, I should be finished my Degree by then.'

16's coach Bernie Mallon said 'all the boys in the side have warmed to Chris, he's a bit of a lad when you get to know him'. Some of his stories about his life in Dublin are hilarious, he's got the boys believing he's a party animal.'  Fortunately the weather has not been overly hot in the past few weeks and with the rain Chris hasn't gotton too homesick.

'I hope somebody from DCC takes the chance to come over and spend some time with Railway Union CC in Ireland, I'm sure we can look after them as well as I have been here."

My trip to South Africa - by Stephen Noone

FROM the 13th January to the 16th March, I had the pleasure of staying in the beautiful country of South Africa. The school I attended was St. Alban’s College in Pretoria. It is a wonderful school and gave me the experience to enjoy another culture. Their schools are bigger than ours, but they don’t necessarily have more students, just more grounds. The school I was in has around the same number of students as CUS but it is ten times bigger.

On the grounds they have six cricket pitches, five rugby fields and a water polo pool. Something I will never forget seeing at the school was Nelson Mandela. He came because his grandchild was attending the school. While there, he looked around the grounds and gave a speech about staying in school and getting a proper education, which is something that will stick with me for a long time.

The first thing that hits you about SA is the heat. During the day it can reach as much as 30 degrees and, combined with the altitude in Pretoria, it makes bowling a six or seven over spell a big task not easily done. In Ireland we take being able to walk places for granted, whereas in SA you are driven everywhere as walking is too dangerous because of the high crime rate. Schools in SA are much different from those in Ireland. The standards of cricket at Under 16 level are more or less the same as in Ireland. On Under 16s in Ireland, every team has three or four players who stick out and who are of a higher standard than the rest. At Under 16 in SA they have more people of that higher standard on the team.

During my stay, I went to the Super Sport Park in Pretoria and saw Shaun Pollock play one of his last games against the West Indies where SA won convincingly. It was a memory I shall never forget. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to South Africa.
